Meet the Rabbits

I totally wanted to write "Meet the Rabbitsons" up there, but refrained.

We welcomed these three to our little homestead a couple weeks ago. We haven't been able to pick names yet, though we haven't really sat down and given it much thought. Zach had said the male was to be El Diablo Blanco, but then said he was joking (only after I shared it on Instagram). I wanted to name one of the females Blanche, because what's more original than naming a rabbit after the color of her fur? Everything? I know. I can't help it with the cheesiness sometimes.

We love having the rabbits so far. They are super easy to care for. They don't make any noise and don't smell. Jack has been curious about them, and I wouldn't trust him with them out of the hutch, but he hasn't been barking at them which is a miracle.

In some ways this feels like such a small and insignificant step towards our goal of raising/growing most of our food, but I have to remember that we are doing what we can do right now. We don't live in a town that allows us to keep chickens, or anything else like that (I have to admit to serious poultry envy when I read about other urban homesteaders keeping chickens). We have a garden (hopefully it is successful; I'm not much of a gardener), and now we have rabbits. That silly phrase "Bloom where you're planted" comes to mind, and that is what we are trying to do.

Love,
Jess

  1. So are these pets or food? You mentioned raising your own food, but you also talked of naming them. Closest I came to naming our meat birds was, "Fried", "Grilled", "KFC", "Roisterer", etc... :) I have friends here that are raising rabbits for food, but I haven't had any rabbit meat to know if me or my family would like it enough to raise them for that purpose. Those bunnies are cute though! Glad the kids are enjoying them.

    1. Erin - we are raising them for meat. These three (two females/one male) are our breeders, so we're just naming them. Rabbit is very similar to chicken - completely interchangeable in recipes. I'm curious to see how they end up comparing in size to a chicken. The farm we buy our meat from was selling rabbit for a while and they were about 5 pounds, but had more bones, if I remember correctly, than chicken.
